How to Write a Song Parody
Song parodies, also known as parody music, involve changing a well-known song to sound the same musically but have different lyrics. They are most commonly done for very popular songs sung by well-known musical artists and bands so that the listener can recognize the song instantly, even though it will contain different lyrics. The most common song parodies are song by Weird Al Yankovic and Spike Jones, among others. These artists are known for their popular song parodies due to the accuracy in which they sound like the songs they are copying.
Pick a song that you would like to make a parody of; preferably ne you don’t particularly like. Song parodies are often done of songs the person doesn’t like since it is a form of “mocking” the song by changing the lyrics, possibly to something even more ridiculous that the song’s original lyrics such as Weird Al Yankovic’s parody of the song “Mona Mona” by Billy Idol, in which he calls “Alimony” and sings about exactly that. The song should also be something other people will recognize as a popular, well-known song whether it is an older or newer song.
Listen to the song as many times as you need to in order to memorize every aspect of the song including the original lyrics, how many verses and choruses there are, the tone and musical styling of the song and other details that will help you to make the parody as close to the original as possible. It also helps to use some of the original words in the song, such as one word of the title that you make your own like turning Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” into “Black or Tan.”
Exaggerate the original singer’s traits in the way he or she sings the songs and incorporate into your own song parody. When you are writing the lyrics to the song and singing the parody, the tone and style of the song as well as the way you sing the song should sound exactly like the original. In most parodies, the only difference will be the lyrics you choose to sing. And even then, some lyrics will be similar but with different meanings. You can also use the original lyrics to turn around and make a mockery of the song’s meaning.
Once you have successfully written your song and played the music for it, you are ready to share it. For starters, you will need to record yourself singing and playing the song, and then uploading that recording to your computer. After doing that, you can upload it to file sharing sites like YouTube or share it on social media sites like Facebook. However be aware that if the song contains the original background music from the original version of the song, YouTube will not allow you to upload it as you do not have permission to use their music. For parodies to share on sites like YouTube, you must play all music yourself and change it just enough to become your own.
